The property is located 40 minutes from Lisbon and 10 km from Sesimbra and beaches. Situated in a 1000 hectare estate and inside the Parque Natural da Arrábida, it includes 55 hectares of vineyard.

The houses converted into rural tourism are situated by the manor house and enjoy a wonderful view over the Serra da Arrábida. Each has a large living/dining room, two or three double bedrooms, where one of the rooms has a double bed, two to three bathrooms and fully equipped kitchen. All houses dispose of central heating and cable TV. The daily fee includes cleaning either once or twice a week.

A pool 14x7 m is availble for the guests.

Private riding lessons in the arena, or organized tours around the property through marvelous sites can be arranged upon request.

Quinta de Calhariz has excellent indoor arena where you can attend private riding lessons.

Next to the arena you can fully equipped boxes for horses, both for renting and for horses belonging to the estate.

At Quinta de Calhariz you can also enjoy horseback riding through the magnificent property, in a unique atmosphere through cork tree forests, small creeks and breafh taking sceneries. All you need is to reserve locally.

In the shade of unique Serra do Risco, in the Risco and Calhariz lands, the first agricultural communities of Neolithic settled and built their villages over 7000 years ago.

Later in the third millennium, the funerary monumento of the Roça do Casal do Meio was built.

Over three thousand years ago, durin the Bronze Age – at the time of Achilles and Ulysses –several settlements occurred all over the Arrábida hills.

In the lands of Calhariz and Risco, a big open village was built around fertile grounds. The funerary monumento of the Roça do Casal do Meio is located at the border of this village. It tis considered one of the most important monuments of this kind in Europe.

 

The past is a constant in these "lands of the South". There is history all around.

From pre-historic bronze and iron settlements, to Phoenician and Roman remains, and even more recent elements from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque period, the is plenty to choose from exploring.

This include Sesimbra castle, the amnion church of Sesimbra, the sanctuary in Cape espichel, Palmela castle and Arrábida convent.

As for geological monuments, we advise a visit ti the dinosaur tracks in cape Espichel.

HISTORY

The farm has belonged to the same family (Sousa de Calhariz) for over 500 years. During the civil war of 1826-34, D. Pedro de Sousa Holstein Beck, 20th morgado, an exceptional Statesman, lent valuable support to King D. Pedro IV in the battle against absolutism and was, consequently, perceived as "the principal deviser of the victory of the liberal cause". In recognition the King granted him several titles, primarily that of Duke of Palmela (1833), and the farm became known as the headquarters of the House of Palmela, as it is called to this day. At the Quinta de Calhariz, Alexandre Herculano, the writer and great friend and coreligionist of the 1st Duke of Palmela, experienced his first rural undertaking.

ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

The central building of the Quinta is a palace in "mannerist" style (which emerged from the yearly years of the Italian Renaissance); deemed one of the best examples in Portugal. In the 17th century, at the end of his term as ambassador in Rome, D. João de Sousa, Bishop of Braga took charge of rebuilding the palace, which had been partially destroyed by a violent fire. He commissioned Italian architects to develop several projects, subsequently importing elements from Italy, including the chapel altar. The chapel walls are covered in 17th century blue and white tiles of exquisite beauty, depicting the life of the Franciscans. The farm is spotted with other buildings, including an old round-shaped church, of unknown construction date.

Main nearby attractions are the unspoiled beaches around Arrábida such as Portinho da Arrábida, Galápos, Figueirinha and Sesimbra. The village of Sesimbra has a long seaside walkway with numerous coffee shops, bars, seafood restaurants and its romanic castle dating back to 1200 A.D..

A drive in the Arrábida hillside offers incredible sea views and lost in the hills you can find the secluded "Convento da Arrábida" founded in 1542 visitation upon request. Within a 20min drive there are charming villages and picturesque sights with restaurants such as Azeitão and Meco.

In nearby Cabo Espichel lies the Sanctuary of "Nossa Senhora do Cabo", the county's most important architectural ensemble and you can find several dinosaurs trails from the Jurassic and Cretaceous geologic periods.

The endless empty sand beaches of Tróia can be reached by ferry from the nearby city of Setúbal crossing the Sado river where you can see residing dolphins and scubadive. Lisbon is 40min away by the A2 highway.

At 8 Km from Quinta de Calhariz, the village of Sesimbra is bathed by crystal clear water where guest as encouraged to go for a reinvigorating swim.

Close to Calhariz, a number of small beater thane cover in the coast of Serra da Arrábida.

If what you seek is something more wild, we advise our guests to pay a visit to the beaches north of cape Espichel, or otherwise in the Peninsula of Troia, south of the river Sado.

The region also as plenty to offer when it comes to food: fresh shellfish and seafood every day, served plainly grilled, enhancing all of the Ocean's flavors. Alternatively, treat your taste buds to fish stews and Cataplanas.

Sweets and cheese serve temptations, including the famous Tortas de Azeitão rolls and sheep's milk cheese, accompanied with the region's production of excellent quality win.
